Sometimes the curtain is the point, and the job of the hardware is to disappear. That is when a motorized track is the right specification rather than a shade.
When to choose drapery over a shade
Drapery brings softness, weight and acoustic absorption that a flat shade cannot. On very wide openings, on full-height glazing and in rooms where the window treatment is meant to be a design feature, a track is usually the better answer.
Track profiles
A 38 mm profile suits shallow ceiling pockets and lighter drapery. A 50 mm profile carries more weight and is the choice for heavy blackout drapery and long runs. Both are available straight or bent to a template for bay and curved openings.
Recessed installation
A recessed track removes every visible fixing. It requires the pocket to be formed correctly at first fix, so the pocket dimensions need to be agreed before the ceiling is closed. This is the detail most often missed.
Drive and control
A belt drive is quieter than a chain drive and handles heavy drapery without complaint. Look for manual override so the curtain can still be moved during a power interruption, and check whether the control system needs dry contact or RS-485.
