A window is the largest single element on most walls, and the way it is dressed sets the tone for everything around it. These ten approaches are the ones that come up most often in contemporary schemes.
Let the shade be the surface
Rather than treating the shade as something to hide, treat it as the wall finish. A textured woven roller shade across a whole elevation reads as material and adds depth to a room that would otherwise be flat plaster.
Conceal the hardware
A recessed ceiling pocket removes the headbox from view entirely. The shade appears to come out of the ceiling, which is the single most effective way to make a large window feel architectural rather than decorated.
Layer sheer over blackout
Two layers on one window gives you the full range from diffused daylight to full darkness, and it means the room never has to be either open or shut. It is the standard approach in hotel suites for exactly this reason.
Run the shade past the window
Mounting outside the reveal, wider than the glass, makes the window read larger and reduces the light leak at the edges. It is a small change with a disproportionate effect.
Match the fabric to the light
A fabric that looks warm in a showroom can look grey in a north facing room. Always evaluate a physical sample in the actual space and at the time of day the room is used.
Frequently asked questions
Inside mount gives the cleanest line and keeps the reveal visible. Outside mount covers more of the wall, reads larger, and reduces edge light leak. Both are valid; the decision is usually driven by reveal depth.
