Measuring Guide
How to measure a window for a motorized shade: mount types, reveal depths, clearances and the measurements we need to manufacture to the millimetre.
Measure twice, fit once
Most shading problems that appear on site trace back to a measurement taken too quickly. There are only a handful of things to get right, and they are the same for almost every product we make.
Send us a schedule and we will check it
If you send your measurements before ordering, we will review them against the product limits and flag anything that looks wrong.
Step 1. Decide the mount type
| Mount | Depth needed | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Inside mount | 50 mm (2 in) minimum | Cleanest line; keeps the reveal visible |
| Reverse roll inside | 76 mm (3 in) minimum | Fabric passes in front of the tube; tighter to the glass |
| Outside mount | No reveal depth needed | Shallow reveals; covers more wall and reduces edge light |
| Ceiling mount | None | Full-height glazing and ceiling pockets |
Step 2. Measure width in three places
Reveals are rarely square. Measure the width at the top, the middle and the bottom of the opening. For an inside mount, give us the narrowest figure. For an outside mount, give us the widest, plus any overlap you want beyond the opening.
Step 3. Measure the drop
Measure from where the shade will be fixed to where you want it to finish. For an inside mount that is the top of the reveal to the sill. For an outside mount add the overlap above and below. Check the headbox and bracket clearances against the product datasheet before ordering.
Step 4. Note anything that protrudes
Window handles, alarm contacts, trickle vents, radiator valves and uneven reveals are the usual reasons a shade will not sit flat. Note anything that intrudes on the order, and where necessary choose outside mount so the shade clears the obstruction.
Step 5. Plan the power route
A hardwired shade needs a supply decided before first fix. If there is no practical route, choose battery or solar power instead and the requirement disappears entirely. Decide this before ordering, not after.
